Jerome continues his journey. He is already on the streets of Brussels, walking slowly where all these translators are gathering. But the world is eerily empty.
Also, DALL-E has no idea what the Rue de la Loi in Brussels looks like.
Me: Create a photorealistic image: We are following St Jerome, dressed as a Franciscan monk, down the Rue de la Loi in Brussels He is walking slowly. It’s raining. In the middle of the road, there is a row of strange tall trees, with illuminated leaves.
DALL-E also does not know where the middle of the road is. The last bit, “illuminated leaves” was just casually ignored, like it happens many times with these prompts.
I am trying to make this look more like the real Rue de la Loi, except for the trees, that part comes from me:
Me: Make the street much wider. Put St Jerome farther away. Place the row of trees in the middle of the street.
My AI friend still has no idea about the middle (and directions in general) but it caught on to “illuminated leaves” with a bit of delay.
One last, desperate try:
Me: Please place exactly one row of trees in the middle of the road.
See how I implored DALL-E to put one row of trees in the middle of the road? This plea was surely unheard. But at least the buildings are beginning to resemble, in a peculiar way, what we actually have along most of the real street. DALL-E even gives a confirmation: “The images have been updated to show a single row of trees in the middle of the road.” Without batting an eye, it echoes back a description that does not match the image at all.
Finally, I tried to put Jerome out of danger. But this was too much for DALL-E that day:
Later on, OpenAI introduced a usage limit: after a few prompts, I usually get told to wait an hour or two.
Anyway, I said let’s start over, but doubling down on the emptiness of the world:
Me: Create a photorealistic image: We are following St Jerome, dressed as a Franciscan monk, down the Rue de la Loi in Brussels He is walking slowly, on the sidewalk on the left. It’s raining. In the middle of the street, in the place of lanes and cars, there is wilderness with illuminated leaves.
At the end of the session, I asked DALL-E to make the street more modern (because this again looks nothing like the real one), but that resulted in an image that was much less interesting, so I am not showing that image today.
